Task 10: what is genre?


What is genre?

Genre - Type or category e.g. comedy, thriller, horror

Sub-Genre - A subdivision of a genre

Hybrid Genre - A blend of two or more different genres e.g. rom-com (romance and comedy)

Codes and Conventions - All the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text.

Genre Tropes - Words or expressions that are overused and become cliché
Genre is important in the film and media industry because it helps to quickly establish the differences between different media forms. Genre also establishes certain codes and conventions to achieve a certain effect and attract their target audience. The audience can develop personal opinions around genre deciding which ones they like and dislike.

 Action  















A popular Action film is fast and furious, its popular for its unique exciting storyline and famous actors (Vin Diesel, Paul Walker)

It has many conventions that it follows to engage the audience 
1.Up beat music
2. high climax scenes
3.stunts

Horror

                                         













Scream is an example of a horror film follows all the main codes and conventions of successful mainstream horrors

1. conventional characters
2. gloomy music to create suspense, this sets the scene and gives the atmosphere a sense of uncertainty and fear
3.preidcarable happy ending
